Bamboo toothbrushes are a great way to reduce the amount of plastic in your bathroom. Dentists advise that we change our toothbrushes every 3 months; as a result we throw away over 260 million plastic toothbrushes in the UK each year!
There are loads of different brands of bamboo toothbrush, but not all bamboo toothbrushes are created equal so we have selected our top picks...
When you first start using a bamboo toothbrush, the feel of bamboo is different from the feel of plastic, and the head may feel slightly larger than what you may be used to.
Be sure to dry your toothbrush handle after use, to help the longevity of the handle.
The handles can be home composted. Just remove the bristles or snap the head off then put the handle in the compost. Used Georganics brush heads can be returned to them via Freepost otherwise they should be put in the general waste.
How sustainable is bamboo?
Most bamboo toothbrushes are made from Moso Bamboo, one of nearly 1,000 species of bamboo (it's not the same bamboo as the pandas eat!). This grass is biodegradable and grows quickly with little water. It is resistant to natural pests, which means it can be farmed organically without pesticides and other chemicals. It also absorbs more CO2 than most trees and is naturally anti-bacterial.
Moso bamboo is grown mostly in China and Taiwan which means that these toothbrushes have some way to travel before they get to your bathroom.
