Alternative for: Plastic toothbrush

This bamboo toothbrush is one of the easiest to buy in the UK and can be found on most UK high streets with Boots stocking the full range, including a brush for kids.

Packaging: paper wrapper and paperboard box

End of Life:

  • Reuse old bamboo toothbrushes for cleaning (after sterilising)
  • Or once it’s really used, pull the bristles out with pilers (these should be put in general waste) and either put the handle in your compost bin or use it for some sort of craft project!

Advantages...

  • Made from sustainably-grown bamboo, which is biodegradable, the wood for the handles comes from FSC-certified forests
  • Available on the UK high street from Boots and Superdrug
  • Packaging is made from recycled material
  • The range includes a kid-sized brush with soft bristles
  • Certified Vegan-friendly by the Vegan Society
  • Certified free from animal cruelty by PETA
  • Bamboo wood is naturally anti-bacterial

Disadvantages...

  • As with almost toothbrushes, the bristles are made from nylon (nylon-6), a synthetic plastic material which is difficult to recycle
  • Although all the packaging is plastic free, both a wrapper and a box is quite a lot of packaging for a single toothbrush

Costs...

~£4 per toothbrush

Where to Buy...

The full range is available from Boots

The adult brush is also available from Superdrug

Tips...

  • To reduce risk of mould, store your toothbrush in a stand or hooks rather than a pot so that the handle can dry out between use
  • It's time to replace your brush when the bristles start to curve (every 1-4 months)
