Replacement for: Bottled laundry liquid or washing capsules

Reduce plastic AND save money by replacing your regular laundry detergent with an Ecoegg. Pop the refillable egg into your washing machine drum with each load instead of using laundry detergent. The egg uses two types of small pellets which provide an eco wash with no harsh chemicals. It's dermatologically tested and 100% hypoallergenic.

Packaging: Cardboard box. Pellets are packaged in small plastic bags (type 5 plastic).

End of Life: The Ecoegg shell is plastic so may be recyclable locally. Any used pellets should go in the general waste. Cardboard packaging is recyclable, plastic bags may be recyclable in supermarket carrier bag recycling.

 Recommended by Isabel M.

"With a toddler and a psoriasis suffer, we are a family with sensitive skin so finding a switch that no-one reacted to was a priority. In our quest to find an alternative to our plastic bottles of laundry lots of people recommended we try the Ecoegg. While this isn't a plastic-free solution, as the 'egg' is made from recycled plastic, it is reusable and significantly reduces our number of waste plastic bottles. It cleans really well and it has saved me over £100."

Advantages...

  • Cheaper than buying laundry liquid and other traditional detergents
  • Suitable for those with sensitive skin
  • Suitable for all types of washing machines and for hand washing
  • Can be used for washes up to 60 degrees
  • The egg doesn't need to be refilled after each wash, just occasionally
  • Refill packs are readily available
  • The egg shell has a 10 year guarantee

Disadvantages...

  • The Ecoegg is not a plastic-free solution, however the reusable egg shell is made from 100% recycled plastic
  • The pellets are shipped in small plastic bags (13 per 720 washes)

Costs...

  • The Ecoegg costs less than 3.5p per wash verses 21.4p per wash for my old detergent (Ecover Concentrated).
  • The Ecoegg is available in a 720, 210 and 54 wash starter packs.
  • Refills cost ~£7.99 for 210 washes.

Where to Buy...

The Ecoegg is widely available online including direct from the manufacturer as well as Amazon, Ocado, Ethical Superstore and more.

You can also find the Ecoegg on the high street in Lakeland, Robert Dyas, Holland & Barrett, Dunelm and often in independent health food stores.

Tips...

  • It is recommended to detox your machine before first use to remove the build up of old detergent. Add white vinegar to the drawer and run an empty wash at 90 degrees.
  • A fragrance-free version is available (look for the yellow egg)
  • The Ecoegg is suitable for cloth nappies as it helps maintain nappy absorbency by eliminating residue build up
  • Just leave the egg on the side to dry between loads and pop in the drum with each new wash
  • The Ecoegg should be removed before a drying cycling (if you have a washer-drier)
  • For smelly gym clothes wash try washing at 40 degrees rather than 30.
  • You don't need to add fabric conditioner, but it you do like a scented wash then you may want to add a drop of conditioner or essential oil.
